Māpua Skin Clinic

New Zealand is entering a skin cancer epidemic, early detection has never been more important.

Do you have moles or spots that:

  • Have changed in size, shape or colour over time.

  • Bleed or do not heal after several weeks.

  • Are asymmetrical or have irregular borders.

  • Are larger than ¼ inch in size.

The KIWISKIN - Mapua Skin Clinic is a team of like-minded, qualified and caring clinicians who utilise the latest techniques, equipment and training in order to check moles or lesions on your body and surgically remove any they feel require biopsy and testing.

We welcome you to visit us at our purpose-built community focussed clinic in the heart of Mapua. Here we offer a quiet and safe space to have your skin checked.  Any resulting surgical skin procedures are then scheduled and undertaken by reputable, skilful staff in our pristine new rooms.

Top of the line equipment and an experienced clinical team ensures you will receive only the best of care.

Most skin cancers are highly treatable when they are caught early.

Having skin cancer screenings is an important part of your healthcare routine. Any adult who’s never had one should consider scheduling a full-body skin exam to establish a baseline and to discuss whether regular skin checks are necessary.

Annual skin exams may be recommended for anyone who:

  • Has a history of melanoma, other skin cancers or precancerous skin lesions.

  • Has a first-degree relative who has had melanoma.

  • Has a large number of moles or a history of atypical moles.

  • Has a history of sunbed use.

  • Has a history of blistering sun burns.

  • Has a history of significant regular sun exposure through activities such as boating or living in a sunny location, or occupations such as landscaping, viticulture, farming or construction.

  • Is an organ transplant recipient.

OUR SERVICES

Single Spot Checks

Most people have made all their moles by the age of 40. A new mole after this age is more suspicious and the older you are the more suspicious a new mole is.

Get to know your skin by checking it regularly, at least every 3 months, particularly if you are over 50, have a family history of skin cancer or have had any bad sunburns as a child.

If you notice a mole or lesion that has changed in the last 3 months, we offer single spot checks to clients of all ages, it only takes a few minutes and will give you peace of mind.

Full Body Skin Check

Around 13 people in New Zealand are diagnosed with either melanoma in-situ or invasive melanoma every day. Melanoma is the 4th most common cancer diagnosed in this country.  The aim of a full-body skin check is early detection of Melanoma, as well as Basal Cell and Squamous Cell Skin Cancers.

Our doctors (Dr Tim Phillips and Dr Katie Maver) are experts at spotting skin cancers when they are early and subtle (when others less experienced might overlook them).  Skin Checks are carried out by one of our trained clinicians who are accompanied at all times by a registered nurse

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen) is a minimally invasive therapy. This type of treatment removes damaged or diseased tissue that comes from a variety of medical conditions. If you know you have lots of scaly lesions to treat it is probably best to book a double appointment.

We may use Cryotherapy to treat some precancerous skin conditions and early-stage skin cancers, including squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma.

Most people recover quickly from the procedure and with little pain.

Minor Skin Surgery

At the KIWISKIN - Mapua Skin Clinic our experienced clinicians (Dr Tim Phillips and Dr Katie Maver) will remove a sample of skin when deemed necessary as part of our diagnostic process (if there is a suspicion of skin cancer of any form).
The additional information obtained from the biopsy can help identify diagnostic clues that are invisible to the naked eye. It is usually undertaken using a local anaesthetic injection into the skin to numb the area. We have our local anaesthetic specially formulated so that it stings less than 'normal' anaesthetic.

The different surgical procedures we offer include:

Punch Biopsy

Shave Excision

Excision with sutures
